Checking which social metrics a platform can actually retrieve
Verify social metrics by network, account type, post format, definition, history and export before relying on a platform report.
Start with the route you will use: Buffer Insights, Hootsuite Analytics, a Sprout Social report or a connector export. The available metric lists do not consistently tie each field to a specific network, connected account or post format.
A metric shown in a native app is not proof that a third-party platform can retrieve it. Match a named field to the platform route and the network, account and post format you need before relying on it.
Make a retrieval sheet
For each required measure, record the business question, network, connected account, post type, metric name, definition, date range, update frequency and route: report, export or API. Separate account-level totals from post-level results. Note whether the report selects posts published during the period or measures activity that occurred during it.
| Question for a proposed report | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| How many people saw a post? | Is the field reach, impressions or views, and which formats provide it? |
| What response did it receive? | Which actions count as engagement, and what is the rate's denominator? |
| Can we compare brands? | Are the account types and metric definitions comparable? |
| Can an analyst use the data later? | Is the needed field in the offered CSV or API route? |
Do not treat a blank cell as zero. Record whether it reflects an unsupported metric, account permission, missing history, delayed update or excluded post type.
Check documented limits
Buffer Insights names channel follower growth, engagement and impressions, and offers a cross-channel overview. Its Metrics chart visualises follower growth and other key stats over time; Insights also names reach and engagement rate. Performance per Post ranks content by engagement rate. These metrics are not broken out by a named network, connected account or post format.
Google Business Profiles are not supported in Buffer Insights due to API limitations. Buffer’s current API is a GraphQL API at api.buffer.com for connecting tools to create and schedule posts; it is distinct from a social network’s API, such as Instagram or X. This does not establish an API route for retrieving Insights metrics; check the technical reference and schema for available fields.
Hootsuite Analytics names post metrics including clicks, comments, reach, engagement rate, impressions, shares, saves, video views and video reach. Its profile metrics include follower growth over time, negative feedback rate, profile visits, reactions and overall engagement rate.
Hootsuite Analytics names Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest and LinkedIn, but its metric lists do not map individual fields to those networks, connected accounts or post formats.
Sprout Social Reporting is described as tracking performance across Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and TikTok, including engagement. The Post Performance Report and Network API limitations names do not identify specific fields.
A Supermetrics field catalogue lists 60 metrics and 111 dimensions for Sprout Social, with destinations including Google Sheets, Looker Studio, Power BI, Excel, BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift and Azure. Named audience fields include Audience (a lifetime follower snapshot), Audience gained and Audience lost (during the chosen reporting period), and Net audience growth (gained minus lost).
Audience gained and Audience lost are not available for Facebook and Threads. The field catalogue does not map these measures to connected account types or post formats, or establish that the same fields appear in Sprout’s report or direct API.
Reconcile a sample result
Request a published-post example for each critical account and format. Write down the native figure, platform figure, timestamps and definitions. Ask the supplier to explain a difference before relying on the number.
A mismatch may reflect timing or calculation rules; a missing field may reflect an access or network API limit.
Inspect the export using an ordinary analyst’s permissions. Confirm the post identifier, account, date, needed content fields, metric columns and applied filters.
If a required measure is unavailable, revise the reporting question or identify another source. Do not rely on a field whose coverage or meaning varies silently.
